Piotr Nalepa Blog webmasterski

About me

Hi, I'm Piotr Nalepa. I build websites and web applications, and I've been writing about it on this blog since 2009. I've worked on the frontend professionally since 2012, and today I'm a Staff Software Engineer at Bishop Fox.

It all started during my studies at the University of Economics in Katowice. I got interested in semantic technologies, and for my thesis I built a semantic search system that was later implemented in one of the social networking sites.

What I do

At Bishop Fox I've led the frontend of Cosmos, a continuous offensive-security platform, as its tech lead since day one of the project. It's used by companies including Google, Amazon, Equifax, Zoom and John Deere. I also initiated the company's internal AI engineering platform, which is now in use across the engineering organisation.

What interests me most is frontend architecture: how to shape the code and the design system so that several teams can ship new features fast without breaking each other's work.

Where I've worked

  • Perform Media (2012-2014): Goal.com in many language versions, including right-to-left, and Smart TV apps for Samsung and LG,
  • eZ Systems (2014-2019): tech lead for the editorial UI of the eZ Platform CMS; I built the live website editor and led the frontend's move from YUI3 to React,
  • Auto1 (2019-2020): the backoffice, AutoHero and auto1.com,
  • OLX (2020-2021): Otodom in four countries; I co-led the refactor that cut feature delivery from 5-6 weeks to 1-2,
  • KUDO (2021-2022): as Lead Software Engineer I built the frontend team, which grew from 2 to 7 people,
  • Lyll (2022-2023): I helped build an advertising platform from scratch, and we shipped its MVP in three months,
  • Bishop Fox (since 2023): Cosmos and the internal AI platform.

What I write about

What I've learned in practice: JavaScript, TypeScript, React, CSS, HTML and frontend architecture. My latest post came from a problem I ran into myself: tables collapsing into one column because of a strict CSP and inline styles in React.

Fun fact: at its peak, the blog had around 30,000 readers a month. Thanks for being here!

Talks

Over the years I've spoken at conferences and meetups across Poland and Europe, including:

  • UXDX EMEA 2021: "Creating Connected Remote Teams",
  • 4Developers and CodeteCon 2019: "Framework-Agnostic UI with Web Components",
  • eZ Conference 2018 in Cologne.

In 2015 I also taught classes at the University of Economics in Katowice.

Outside work

I build my own projects. The main one is stockone.io, a tool for analysing stock market situations that I designed, built and run myself.

Away from code, my big passions are rock music and football.
